Bearded dragons are lizards of desert or semi-desert origin. Their natural habitat is dry rocks, sands with occasional dry thickets. The bearded dragon should have a safe substrate in the terrarium. These lizards have a great tendency to snack on the substrate, which may result in damage or clogging of the digestive system.
Therefore, especially in the case of novice breeders, it is worth focusing on a strict substrate, such as a mixture of clay and sand (check the substrate for Agama with Clay available in our offer) or one that can be digested by the lizard to some extent (e.g. cellulose substrate) . You can also use corn pellets, which can lead to blockage if eaten in large quantities.
It is absolutely necessary to avoid substrates that are hard/sharp, e.g. wood, coconut chips, bark.

Specialist terrarium sand looks extremely aesthetic and natural. However, loose sand for agama is recommended for more experienced breeders who are experienced in observing the reptile's behavior and will notice any irregularities. If we decide to use only sand in the terrarium, it is worth observing the lizard if it does not consume excessive amounts of it while eating food or simply during the day. Excess sand in the body in extreme cases can lead to clogging of the digestive system, so in the case of snacking, I recommend changing the substrate to another, for example sand with clay. Sand with Clay is characterized by a compact consistency, which limits the sticking of grains of sand to the food and the mouth of the reptile.
You can also use a mixture of sand with calcium carbonate, which is often mistakenly referred to as edible sand for agama. Calcium carbonate sand, produced from pure Calcium, dissolves in the body providing the reptile with calcium and reduces the risk of blockage of the digestive system. It should be remembered, however, that lime in excess can also harm the reptile, so we have to watch the lizard all the time to make sure it does not eat too much substrate.
