Substrate for the Steppe Tortoise

Substrate for the Steppe Tortoise

In this category you will find various substrates and specialized substrates for steppe turtles. The substrate for the steppe tortoise should, above all, be similar to that in its natural habitat, provide it with walking stability, do not dust and be safe for it, i.e. resistant to mold and minimizing the risk of swallowing. Here you will find a ready-made substrate for a steppe turtle as well as homogeneous substrates from which you can prepare a DIY mix tailored to the needs of your turtle and yours.

What Substrate for Steppe Turtle?

These turtles live in the barren, dry, rocky and grassy areas of the Central Asian steppes. On the other hand, in the burrows where they sleep, overwinter and rest, there is relatively high humidity. Soil alone is not enough for a steppe turtle, these turtles need a tank divided into a grassy and a dry zone.

The best substrate for a dry zone is a mixture imitating steppe soil. Appropriate conditions will reduce the animal's stress, increase its safety, positively affect its health and encourage the cultivation of natural behavior.

How to make a terrarium substrate for steppe turtle?

One of the zones of the terrarium should be sprinkled with a substrate imitating steppe soil, i.e. a mixture of peat substrate for turtles or dry, unfertilized garden soil with e.g. sand, clay and gravel. We can pour all the ingredients into the terrarium separately (the turtles will mix the substrate and knead it themselves after some time), make such a mixture yourself or buy a ready-made substrate for the steppe turtle.

Clay mixed with sterile terrarium sand in a proportion of 30/70 (a mixture typical of dry-loving species) will also work well.

In the second part, you can arrange a grassy part using natural turf with roots of grasses and other plants. Interesting additions to the terrarium are various types of sterilized branches, stones or old pots.
