The substrate for the greek tortoise should, above all, be similar to that in its natural habitat, provide it with walking stability, do not dust and be safe for it, i.e. resistant to mold and minimizing the risk of swallowing. Here you will find a ready-made substrate for a greek turtle as well as homogeneous substrates from which you can prepare a DIY mix tailored to the needs of your turtle and yours.
The Greek tortoise in its natural habitat is found in the Mediterranean basin, it usually chooses dry, sunny and partly stony regions with areas densely covered with vegetation with low trees or a small admixture of them. In the terrarium for this turtle, apart from dry areas, it is also worth providing more humid zones.
We arrange the dry zone like a stony steppe, the substrate mix should consist of gravel, sand, clay and peat.
The best choice for a humid zone is turf with roots, watered grass in the terrarium will be a substitute for the natural environment. The terrarium can also be partially lined with pine bark and covered with an additional layer of hay or plant-fiber substrate for turtles.

The dry zone of the terrarium should be sprinkled with a substrate imitating steppe soil, i.e. a mixture of peat substrate for turtles or dry, unfertilized garden soil with e.g. sand, clay and gravel. We can pour all the ingredients into the terrarium separately (the turtles will mix the substrate and knead it themselves after some time), make such a mixture yourself or buy a ready-made substrate for the steppe turtle.
Clay mixed with sterile terrarium sand in a proportion of 30/70 (a mixture typical of dry-loving species) will also work well.
