At the very beginning, it is worth considering whether the terrarium will be planted with live plants and what sex of the lizard we will decide on, because when choosing the right substrate for the Chameleon, these two aspects are important.
We must know that when deciding on a female chameleon, you should provide her with a much thicker layer of substrate. Why? Becouse females regularly lay eggs, they look for a moist place in the substrate where they can dig a sufficiently deep hole. Although males do not need such a thick layer of substrate, such a thick layer makes it easier and faster to keep the terrarium clean. Chameleons are relatively large lizards that produce a lot of excrement, the use of a thicker layer of the substrate allows for efficient collection of impurities from the top layer, which will need to be replenished from time to time.
The second aspect is planting the terrarium with live plants. If we decide on such a variant, we must provide the plant with a suitable substrate for growth. For this purpose, mixtures of bioactive substrate with coconut fibre, sand or coconut peat can be used. In the case of a terrarium without live vegetation, a mixture of coconut peat and sand will be a good solution.

Chameleons need a lot of space and very good ventilation in the terrarium, preferably when the walls of the tank are made of mesh. In such a terrarium, ensuring a good level of humidity can seem troublesome. A properly absorbent substrate solves the problem of maintaining the humidity in the terrarium at the right level, because regularly sprinkled it constantly evaporates, thus giving away moisture. Therefore, it is worth choosing a coconut substrate or one containing coconut fibers in its mix, because it is a good substrate for absorbing and retaining moisture.
