It is worth remembering that although a given species of reptile occurs in a specific region, the substrate itself may differ in places. The sand in the terrarium looks very aesthetic, encourages lizards to natural behavior such as digging, they can also lay eggs in it. But when is it worth choosing sand with an admixture of clay? In fact, in the case of most desert reptiles, it depends mainly on the breeder's preferences and what visual effect he wants in the terrarium. When using sand in terrarium, it is recommended to separate the area for eating a meal, e.g. on a larger flat stone, tile or bowl. However, if you use sand-only substrate and have noticed that your reptile eats the substrate in excess while eating a meal, then it is worth switching to sand with clay, which will be safer for it.

If we decide to use only sand in the terrarium, it is worth observing the lizard if it does not consume excessive amounts of it while eating food or simply during the day. Excess sand in the body in extreme cases can lead to clogging of the digestive system, so in the case of snacking, I recommend changing the substrate to another, for example sand with clay. Sand with Clay is characterized by a compact consistency, which limits the sticking of grains of sand to the food and the mouth of the reptile.
You can also use a mixture of sand with calcium carbonate, which is often mistakenly referred to as edible sand for agama. Calcium carbonate sand, produced from pure Calcium, dissolves in the body providing the reptile with calcium and reduces the risk of blockage of the digestive system. It should be remembered, however, that lime in excess can also harm the reptile, so we have to watch the lizard all the time to make sure it does not eat too much substrate.
Sand with clay is a special composition of sand, rock aggregate and clay, characteristic of some desert regions. Thanks to the clay content, after wetting and drying again, it creates a hard and compact structure in which you can build natural pits, caves and tunnels, as well as construct walls. If only sand is used, hiding places and the like must be introduced into the terrarium separately. The visual effects can therefore be very different, but our reptile will feel good in both editions.
